Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home was given a favorable short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our higher scores in that category with a score of B+. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be a real strength for this nursing home. It outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the nation with 59.5 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was long-term care. This nursing home was awarded an impressive long-term care grade, with a B+ in this area. Facilities that receive this kind of grade in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 97.94238 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
The final area we rated turned out to be this nursing home's worst area. Nevertheless, even in its worst category we still gave it a respectable grade of B- for nursing. The nursing grade considers several subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also considered quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This facility was above average in two of the major statistics we focus on, including minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
