Facility Inspections
We want to point out that this facility really outperformed its overall grade in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in this category with an A. Our inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area typically have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. Nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B-. Our nursing grade is largely associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The next best area we awarded this nursing home in any category came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. Long-term care grades are often used to score a nursing home's performance as a traditional nursing home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services offered by a rehabilitation facility. One of the criteria we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.72701 percent of its patients. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.94 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this place is not too far off the national average.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed was short-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is a decent grade in this area. Our short-term care grade is commonly used to judge a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to provide quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The last item we assessed in this area is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 44.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.
