Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our inspection scores are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ in our long-term care category. This is one of our higher scores. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 93.023254 percent of its patients. This is a few points lower than we expected but still a decent figure. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 2.21 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than most nursing homes since it had some more complicated patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of short-term care, this facility was awarded a grade of just D in that area. In forming these short-term care ratings, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. It looks like this nursing home was subpar in multiple staffing areas we assessed. The facility supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other nursing homes. The last area we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better in this area, with 53.2 percent of its residents returning home. This was just about this nursing home's only redeeming quality in this area.
Nurse Quality
The final category we assessed was nursing, which was this facility's worst category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that area. Sadly, this grade pulled down the nursing home's overall profile a bit. Our nursing category analyzes several factors, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of receiving below average marks for nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic dragged down this facility's nursing score significantly.
