Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this nursing home an A for our short-term care rating. This score is much more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more than seven hours of care per week from registered nurses to each resident. This is really the gold standard in this area, as it's about 50% higher than the average facility's level of registered nurse staffing. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Indiana in this area with 62.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another category where this facility excelled. In fact, we awarded this nursing home an A- for our inspections category. This score is far more impressive than its overall score. Inspection scores are tied to several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspections. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category typically have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this facility a favorable grade in nursing. This facility earned a grade of B in this category, which is one of our better grades. The nursing grade weighs many datapoints, many of which are based on nursing hours. This facility provided 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled levels of nurses. Both are impressive figures, which typically correlates with quality care. Lastly, we also looked at nursing quality measures in determining our nursing ratings. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as good measures of the caliber of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest category was long-term care, which is the last category we assessed. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this category. In spite of some respectable grades in other areas, this score is nevertheless disappointing so we would like to to make a note of it. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 93.37748 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be a few points below what we were hoping for but still a decent percentage. To our surprise, this place was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
