Although we didn't rate this facility favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Inspection ratings are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these reports. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities with severe deficiencies linked to risks to resident well being. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Despite this deficiency, this place still had a relatively positive report.

One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an C. Our nursing grade focuses on the facility's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. Based on the data, it looks like this facility provides an impressive 5.5 hours per patient on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than most places offer. In determining our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as minimizing major falls. This nursing home performed admirably in this datapoint. Avoiding serious falls is often a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Many falls can be prevented if a nursing home provides enough nurses to assist its patients.

Historical

Unfortunately, this nursing home only received a grade of D for its long-term care score, which is not a very good score. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this place also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. While it had 2.62 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad due to it having some more complicated patients.

Historical

The last category we scored was short-term care, which was a low point for this nursing home. We gave this facility a grade of D in our short-term care category. In computing these short-term care scores, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 44 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this nursing home's short-term care score.
