Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. Facilities that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are well cared for. In addition to offering well above average levels of nursing care, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
Facility Inspections
This facility has also received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. The nursing category includes many subcategories, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is an impressive statistic which typically correlates with quality care. Finally, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a B. Believe it or not, this is this facility's weakest category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when it's weakest score still rates higher than most nursing homes. Short-term care scores are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of patients that eventually returned home from this nursing home. It performed respectably in this area with 47.3 percent of its residents returning home.
