Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave it an A-. Our inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area generally have very few severe deficiencies. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. This is certainly a good sign for this nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
The second highest category we gave this nursing home in any category came in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most facilities. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 43.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this is below average.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care, where this nursing home received a grade of B- in this area. With our long-term care score, we analyze the amount of care provided by a facility, along with some quality measures. Once we finished looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinates 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 4.4 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this figure is somewhat concerning, this number can be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
This facility's least impressive area was nursing, which is the final area we scored. For this area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of just D. We scrutinized the qualifications of nurses working for the nursing home, as well as the quantity of time those nurses were with patients, in computing our rating in this area. Quantity of nursing care is apparently not the problem here with this place's grade. This place actually provides an above average 4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was above the national average in both of these metrics.
