Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ short-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Our short-term care ratings are believed to be more important for people requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home is the gold standard when it comes to skilled nursing staffing. The facility offered roughly 1.5 times as many registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical nursing home. This is what we look for when assessing a facility in this category. The last measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Maryland in this area with 71.1 percent of its patients returning home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-plus

This first-rate facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A+. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our nursing rating is primarily based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides an incredible 5.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These metrics are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Our inspection grades are based on many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this place had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The next area we scored is long-term care, in which this nursing home was given a grade of B. Believe it or not, this proved to be this facility's worst category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when it's worst score still rates higher than most facilities. Facilities that receive this type of score in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure residents are well cared for. In addition to offering well above average levels of nursing care, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 98.74214 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. This combination proved to be effective as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.78 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
