Medical Staff Hours Per Patient (2019)
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area typically have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
An additional reason we rated this facility so favorably is that it was awarded an A+ short-term care grade. This is flat out as good as it gets in this area. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have good rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it supplied about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the typical facility. This is generally an excellent sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Pennsylvania in this area with 72.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also excelled in the category of long-term care, where it received a score of A. Very few facilities fared better in this area. For patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. One of the factors we considered on top of nursing hours is vaccines. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this nursing home provided information on its vaccination levels. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
The final category we scored is nursing, where this nursing home was given an A-. This rounded out a first-rate report card. Only a select few nursing homes earned an A- or higher in in each area we assessed. Our nursing rating analyzes the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility provided 5.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This was one of the better totals we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. In addition to offering impressive levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed as well as any nursing home in Pennsylvania in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
