Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Inspection grades are tied to many datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key item to look for on these reports. You should especially avoid facilities that have severe deficiencies linked to risks to resident well being. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B. The nursing score analyzes many components, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we graded was short-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a C. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This category is typically a fair assessment of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who returned home from this facility. We found that 30.2 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually below the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is long-term care. This facility was given a very poor grade of F in that category. If you are looking for services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care grades. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.210526 percent of its residents, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.83 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not bad since it had more complex patients.
