Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more favorable category grades came in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 99.5 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at is short-term care, where this facility received a grade of C in this area. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this facility provided registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's worst area was nursing, which is the last area we assessed. Sadly, it received an F in this area. In spite of some decent grades in other areas, this grade is still concerning so we would like to to make a note of it. When computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses are seeing residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home averaged a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. In addition to its weak nursing hours, this nursing home received suboptimal scores in many of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We found that more of this place's residents experienced falls which led to major injury.
