Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it did receive an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that area with a B+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's short-term care rating is one of its respectable scores. The facility was awarded a grade of C in this category. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared better than most nursing homes in this metric with 51.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is long-term care, where this nursing home was awarded a grade of C in this category. In computing these long-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid total. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.45 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was not quite as favorable than its other scores in this category.
Nurse Quality
The last area we assessed is nursing, in which this facility was given a rock bottom score in this category as well. Sadly, it received a lowly F in this area, which is definitely a major concern. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we consider the number of hours nurses are seeing patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home averages 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
