Facility Inspections
To go along with its favorable overall score, we awarded this facility an A+ for our inspections rating. Our inspection ratings are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care score. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the elite volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were pleased by the facility's vaccination record. For example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. This combination proved to be successful as this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. Our nursing grade is based on many subcategories, many of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. This place provides an impressive 4.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a greater quantity of nursing than that offered by most facilities. Lastly, we also factored some quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. Specifically, we looked at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at is short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a solid grade of B-. This turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. In computing our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This rating is frequently a useful assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The final measure we considered in this area is the number of patients who returned home from the facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
