Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Our inspection ratings are based on many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more impressive category scores was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outperformed most facilities in this category. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 99.56044 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. The last statistic we looked at is its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 2.6 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facilities next best area is short-term care. We gave it a C in this category. This is basically a slightly below average grade in this area. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is generally a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 42.9 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this is below average.
Nurse Quality
The next category we looked at was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is certainly a major concern. We assessed the licensure of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses worked with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. We do not think quantity of care was the reason for this facility's poor nursing score. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, this place actually surpassed the national average. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this place did not fare as well in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place was above the national average in both of these statistics. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
