Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it a grade of A. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Nurse Quality
We also gave this nursing home a decent score in the category of nursing care, with a grade of B-. Our nursing grade is primarily tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This place provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing scores also consider quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is generally a reliable indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's next best area is its long-term care grade, where it was awarded a C. In determining these long-term care scores, we analyze the facility's personal care services. After assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. Unfortunately, this nursing home vaccinated a relatively low 72.42991 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was also below average. We found that this place had 2.18 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the medical complexity of patients
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is short-term care, which proved to be this facility's weakest category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this area. In calculating our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Given its grade in this area, we weren't surprised to discover that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 37.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
