Facility Inspections
In addition to earning a great overall rating, this nursing home also performed well in inspections, which is based on the facility's inspection reports. We awarded it an A for that category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also fared very well in the area of short-term care, where it received a score of A. Very few nursing homes performed better in this area. Short-term care scores are important for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates more highly-skilled nursing services. This means a vast range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Washington in this area with 56.1 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our third area, this nursing home also earned a grade of B+ for its long-term care rating. This is a well above average grade in this area. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.07 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to the final category, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. We awarded it a B+ for that area. This rounded out a first-rate profile. The nursing category weighs quite a few factors, most of which are associated with nursing hours. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, this place surpassed the national average. Finally, we also looked at nursing quality measures in determining our nursing ratings. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
