Short-term Care Quality
This facility received a short-term care score which is stronger than its overall score. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B+ in this area. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that returned home from the nursing home. We found that 32.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an B+. Our nursing rating is based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of training of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. About one-fourth of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled levels of nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by these types of nurses more in determining our nursing scores. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we looked at was long-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a decent grade of B-. Long-term care scores are pivotal for prospective residents seeking non-healthcare services such as personal care. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 3.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Facility Inspections
The final category we looked at is inspections. This nursing home didn't receive favorable inspections in recent years. We had to give it an F in this area. Since this information is compiled by independent government inspectors, we heavily weight negative feedback in this area. This really pulled down this facility's overall grade. For nursing homes that received this bad of an inspection score, we recommend scrutinizing the severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This particular facility was hit with 6 deficiencies by CMS. The only favorable thing we found is that none of these deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they caused a threat to patient safety or health. Finally, we also want to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was assessed significant government fines in recent years amounting to over $100,000. This typically means that a facility's bad performance spanned more than one year.
