Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this nursing home overall, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that had a long list of severe deficiencies. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable category came in the area of long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a B-. Our long-term care scores are critical for people seeking non-healthcare services such as personal care. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 97.674416 percent of its residents, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, this place's hospitalization rate was less favorable. We found that this facility had 2.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's poor nursing grade where it received an F. We scrutinized the levels of nurses working for the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses spent with patients, in calculating our rating in this category. This particular nursing home offered a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This number is quite a bit below the national average. On top of its below average nursing hour totals, this facility also received suboptimal marks in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We found that a higher percentage of this nursing home's patients sustained falls leading to serious injury. We would argue that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this nursing home receiving a poor nursing score.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we scored was short-term care, in which this facility received an abysmal score here as well. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is definitely a major concern. With our short-term care rating, we try to craft a meaningful measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. With its abysmal rating in this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this facility offered far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients that returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 33.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
