Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a strong overall grade, this facility also received first-rate government inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better scores in this area, with a grade of A. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's quality category grades came in the area of long-term care. We awarded them one of our stronger scores in that area, with a score of B+. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of assessing the elite volume of care provided by aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were pleased by the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.45 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is short-term care. This facility was awarded an impressive short-term care score, with a B in this category. In our short-term care score, we try to craft a fair measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in the nation in this area with 60 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Nurse Quality
The next category we rated was nursing, turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. This was one of just a few weak points in a strong profile. When calculating our nursing ratings, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the problem here. Based on the data, it looks like this facility provides an above average 4.3 hours per patient on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than most places provide. Lastly, we also factored in some quality-based measures in this category. This nursing home fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented with better nursing care.
