In addition to being a quality facility overall, this facility really excelled in the category of short-term care, where it received a grade of A. Short-term care scores are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place fared as well as just about any facility in Michigan in this area with 65.6 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.

This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A-. Few facilities with an overall score in this range performed as well in multiple categories. Inspection scores are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's inspections. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. Nursing grades are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as good measures of the caliber of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The last category we scored was long-term care. We awarded this nursing home a decent grade in that category, with a grade of C. Although this wasn't as strong as many of this facility's other scores, it is still not a poor grade. Our long-term care ratings are more important for those needing more conventional services associated with personal care. After considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 99 percent of its residents against pneumonia. The last datapoint we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 3.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
