Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home actually didn't perform quite as poorly in the area of long-term care. We awarded it a B- for that area. Long-term care grades focus on a facility's assistance with daily living rather than the skilled therapy or medical services that are critical to a rehabilitation facility. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is a very solid percentage. Finally, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this nursing home an C. There are a number of datapoints included in this grade. Many of these criteria relate to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place surprisingly fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it scored well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

Facility Inspections
Unfortunately, this nursing home received a lowly F for its inspection score. We would advise paying close attention to any deficiencies on a nursing home's inspection reports when it receives this bad of an inspection rating. We would scrutinize the severity of the deficiencies. This nursing home had 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only positive thing we can say is that none of these deficiencies were in the categories that suggest that they created a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, CMS cited this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. Hopefully, its performance improves in the future, but until then we simply can't recommend this facility.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded was short-term care. This nursing home received an abysmal grade of F in this category. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Based on its poor score in this area, we were not shocked to find that this nursing home provides substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.6 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
