Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a strong overall score, this nursing home also received top notch health inspections in recent years. We gave it one of our higher scores in that area, with an A+. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to this facility's list of achievements, it also was awarded a top-shelf long-term care score. We gave them an elite grade of A- in this area. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia can be a deadly illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.85 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
The next highest category we gave this facility in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. In crafting our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that returned home from the nursing home. It fared better than most facilities in this metric with 52.1 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we graded was nursing. For that category, we gave this facility a grade of C. Our nursing grade analyzes several subcategories, but the main consideration is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these statistics. With fewer than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this area. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving residents even once per day.
