Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall grade, it received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facilities next most favorable area was long-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road score in this category. Our long-term care scores are more critical for folks requiring more conventional assistance related to personal care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 98.79518 percent of its residents. Unfortunately, its hospitalization rate was less impressive. We found that this facility had 2.41 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's third most favorable area ended up being short-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. In our short-term care category, we try to create a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a facility's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. We found that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. It is still important to determine whether this also correlates to a lower quality of care. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the nation in this area with 51 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to the fourth area, this facility really didn't perform well in this area either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is about as terrible as it gets. When determining our nursing ratings, we assess both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This place offered a meager 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
