We want to point out that this facility outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Additionally, we awarded this facility a B+ in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more impressive grades. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to elite nursing hour statistics, this nursing home's vaccination records was superb as well. Indeed, this facility vaccinated 98.78049 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This combination proved to be effective as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 2 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most facilities since it had more complex patients.

The third category we analyzed was short-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Our short-term care scores are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the nation in this area with 51.1 percent of its residents returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.

The last area we graded was nursing, ended up being this nursing home's weakest category. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in this area. This really is one of just a few weak links of an otherwise strong profile. Our nursing grade looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of training of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the problem here. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an above average 4.1 hours per resident each day. This is more nursing care than most facilities provide. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade substantially.
