Facility Inspections
In addition to faring well overall, this nursing home also earned a nearly flawless inspection report. Consequently, it received one of our best scores in that area with a grade of A+. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area generally have few of these severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was given a strong long-term care grade as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category with a score of B+. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.570854 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a deadly health condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility does not leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.24 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. We looked at the skill-level of nurses at the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses were with patients, in determining our rating in this category. This particular nursing home provided 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place excelled in these areas, with excellent scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we assessed is short-term care. We awarded this facility a decent score in that area, with a B-. Although this wasn't as high as some of this facility's other grades, it is still a middle of the pack score. In forming these short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that just 43.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
