In our short-term care assessment, we seek to forge a valuable gauge for rehabilitation. In doing so, we analyze a nursing home's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final statistic we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Hawaii in this area with 71.6 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients ever return home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In fact, nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A. In determining our nursing grades, we assess both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This was one of the higher totals we found. In addition, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing high levels of care, this place was also above average in several of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These statistics are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a facility offers.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we assessed was long-term care. Contributing to its high-end profile, this nursing home also excelled in that category. In fact, we awarded it a of A for that area. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to really impressive nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination statistics is first-rate as well. In fact, it vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Facility Inspections
Lastly, this facility has earned near flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A in this category. This is one of the few places in the country to receive an A- or better in every single category. Inspection grades are tied to several data points found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
