Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we awarded this facility a B+ in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more impressive scores. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an impressive grade of D. The nursing rating includes a handful of components, but the paramount one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. In addition to receiving below average marks for nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients suffering pressure ulcers and found that this place was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing score substantially.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at is short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a D for short-term care, leaving this as its weakest area. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is often a fair assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 31.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
