Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in this category with an A+. Inspection scores are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also wanted to note that this facility was given impressive long-term care marks in this assessment. We gave them one of our higher grades in this area, with a grade of B. This turned out to be the facility's second best grade. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care grades. After considering the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 91.75705 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.89 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most facilities since it had more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
This facility also received a strong nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of F in this area. Nursing ratings are based largely on nurse staffing levels. With a meager 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this place's nurse staffing levels were well below average. Unfortunately, this place also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This nursing home was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care, which is this facility's weakest category. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this area, which is obviously concerning. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more critical for patients requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Based on its weak score in this category, we were not surprised to discover this nursing home offered far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 30.4 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
