Although we gave this facility a terrible overall score, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with a list of deficiencies flagged. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

This facility's second best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. Our nursing rating looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place offered a meager 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. On top of receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found that this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This statistic dragged down this nursing home's nursing rating substantially.

This facility wound up receiving a rock-bottom score in our long-term care category. It was given an F in this area. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is often a bad sign for patient care and it may indicate that the nursing home is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. We were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to only 51.698112 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.84 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. This is its best score in this category.

Switching gears to our final category, this nursing home did not perform very well in this area either. Due to an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is really as terrible as it gets. In our short-term care score, we endeavor to forge a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze a facility's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Considering its poor score in this category, we weren't stunned to discover that this place offers substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most facilities. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 25.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
