Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. Our nursing grade assesses the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home averages just 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as preventing major falls. While this nursing home didn't have as many nursing hours per resident as many other facilities we assessed, it was still better than average in the area of preventing major falls. This is usually a good indicator of how carefully a nursing home's nursing staff is tending to its residents. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The next best category we awarded this nursing home in any category came in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. In computing our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is often a useful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. We were surprised to find that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. The facility supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. It is important to determine whether this is adversely impacting the quality of care. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 32.6 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest area was long-term care, which is the last category we looked at. In this category, we gave this nursing home a grade of just D. If you are looking for services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care grades. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 94.13203 percent of its residents, which is an above average datapoint. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.07 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
