Facility Inspections
While we did not rate this place favorably overall, we want to point out its relatively favorable health inspections in recent years. We gave it a B+ in this category, which is much better than its overall grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that have too many severe deficiencies. This place received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's more favorable category grades came in the category of long-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a B. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 77.13415 percent of its residents. This is somewhat lower than we were hoping for but still a respectable figure. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. There are many datapoints within this area. Most of these criteria reflect staffing levels. With a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this place's nurse staffing levels were well below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these scores hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our final area, this facility really didn't perform well in this category either. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in short-term care, this is really as terrible as it gets. In crafting our short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. With its score in this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this place was well below average in terms of the quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 44 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
