Facility Inspections
The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with an A. This is a much better score than the place's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. Arguably the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we also wanted to point out that this facility was given impressive long-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our better scores in this category, with a B+. This turned out to be the facility's second highest score. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.66888 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.74 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes since it had more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of D. Nursing scores are mostly based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility offered a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Unfortunately, this facility also had terrible scores in several of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hours. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in this datapoint.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's worst category was short-term care, which is the last area we looked at. It received an F in this area. Despite multiple acceptable scores in other areas, this score is still concerning so we would like to to make a note of it. In computing our short-term care scores, we assess a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is typically a useful measure of the facility's rehabilitation. Given its grade in this area, we were not stunned to discover that this place was well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the measures we looked at. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 35.9 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
