Facility Inspections
This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave them an A+ in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home really excelled in the area of long-term care, where it received a grade of A-. Only a select group of facilities performed better in this category. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in this category it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. Our nursing score assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we looked at was short-term care, proved to be this facility's weakest area. We awarded this nursing home a D in that category. This really is one of just a few dings in a very solid report card. In the category of short-term care, we strive to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. In this facility's case, it looks like it provided less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than a typical facility. The final statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 40.4 percent of its residents returning home.
