We gave this facility an impressive grade of A- for our long-term care grade. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 2.31 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than most facilities due to it having more complicated patients.

This nursing home also received an impressive short-term care score. Indeed, we gave it a grade of B in this category, which is one of our more favorable scores. Our short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a broad spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. We were very impressed to discover that this nursing home provides its patients substantially more physical therapist hours than most other nursing homes. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in California in this area with 59.8 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Looking to our inspection category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Our inspection grades are based on the facility's health inspection reports. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially focus on the severity of the deficiencies. This nursing home had 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to find that none were in any of the categories labeled J through L. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to place resident health or safety in imminent harm or jeopardy. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

The last area we scored is nursing, which was a low point for this facility. We gave this nursing home a grade of D for the area of nursing. When computing a facility's nursing grade, we weigh the number of hours nurses spend with patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality measures in computing our nursing scores. This nursing home was above average in two of the statistics we focus on, with solid scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
