To go along with its decent overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

In addition, we also would like to point out that this facility was given impressive short-term care marks this year. We awarded them one of our better scores in that category, with a B+. This proved to be the facility's second strongest score. Our short-term care grades are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Pennsylvania in this area with 64.6 percent of its patients returning home.

We also gave this nursing home a decent score in the category of nursing care, with a grade of C. Our nursing score focuses on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, our nursing ratings also factor in some quality-focused measures. We especially like to look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. These metrics are decent measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these issues.

Historical

Switching gears to our last area, this nursing home didn't perform well. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in long-term care, this was this facility's weakest category. Facilities that receive this type of score in long-term care may not provide the type of consistent 24/7 care that some other nursing homes provide. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to 91.37931 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home was not as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.85 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not bad since it had more complicated patients.
