To go along with its strong overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for short-term care. Short-term care grades are typically employed to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility with 64.2 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

Adding to its impressive profile, this facility also performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. Our nursing score focuses on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We weigh both the levels of training of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient per day. About one-fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled levels of nurses. This is a high percentage of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by skilled nurses more in determining our nursing ratings. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The last area we analyzed is long-term care. We gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. You should not necessarily dismiss a facility as a result of a single concerning score though. For residents seeking a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.061035 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.73 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad due to it having some more complex patients.
