Facility Inspections
While we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it earned a very impressive government inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our better grades in that category with a B. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. This place was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also pleasantly surprised to find that this nursing home earned a solid short-term care score in our assessment. We gave it a grade of C in this category. In our short-term care score, we attempt to create a fair gauge for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. This place fared well in this area with 56.5 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to point out that this nursing home received an F for its nursing grade. In calculating a nursing home's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for patients and the levels of training of the nurses. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. This nursing home also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than twice the national average in this metric. This is alarming when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of earning a weak nursing score.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we rated was long-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category, which is an abysmal score. For patients in need of a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 96.296295 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 3.48 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not bad since it had more complicated patients.
