While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. This is an excellent sign for the quality of care at this nursing home.

This facility was given its next best category grade in the area of short-term care. We gave this facility a grade of B- in this category, which is a reasonably acceptable grade. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The tricky part is determining what effect this had on quality of care. The final statistic we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. It performed more favorably in this metric. We found it was above average in this area with 54.6 percent of its residents returning home.

We also gave this nursing home a decent score in the category of nursing care, with a grade of C. Our nursing grade assesses the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of training of the nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also factored in some quality-based metrics. This facility fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home beat the national average.

The next category we analyzed was long-term care, which is a weak spot for this nursing home. We gave this nursing home a grade of just D for the area of long-term care. For prospective patients looking for a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this place also keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.14 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
