Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this nursing home only received a D for its short-term care score, which was actually one of its better category scores. In forming these short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Given its grade in this area, we were not shocked to find that this place was subpar in terms of its quantity of registered nurse hours offered to its residents. Frankly, this was about what we expected here. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 39.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
We were stunned to find that this nursing home also excelled in the category of nursing. In fact, we gave it an impressive grade of D for that category, which is one of our best grades. Our nursing rating analyzes many subcategories, however, the primary one is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in determining our nursing scores. This place was above average in two of the major statistics we considered, with good scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our fourth category, this facility really did not fare well in this area either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in long-term care, this is just about as terrible as it gets. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 99.431816 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.8 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
