Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

While this nursing home earned a decent overall rating, its inspections score is notably more impressive than its overall grade. Due to a strong government inspection report this year, it earned a strong score in that area with a grade of B+. Our inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area typically have few of these severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 12 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility also received an impressive short-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we awarded them a B+ in this category, which is one of our more favorable scores. In determining these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 4.7 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also received a strong nursing grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ in that category, which is one of our better scores. Nursing scores are based largely on nurse staffing levels. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of moving a resident more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The next area we rated is long-term care. We gave it a lowly F for this category, which is an abysmal grade. This is clearly a major disappointment. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. We were pleased to find that this nursing home vaccinates 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
