Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection grades weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an A+ for its short-term care grade. With our short-term care category, we try to forge a sound measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Remarkably, this facility provides roughly 1.5 times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we assessed. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in this area with 62.3 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. In calculating a facility's nursing score, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. At least one fourth of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing. In calculating our grades, we apply more weight to care provided by registered nurses. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This place fared well in some of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
In the final category, this facility also received an excellent long-term care score, with a grade of B+. This topped off an elite profile. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 99.04306 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.08 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
