Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is it received a very impressive short-term care score. Short-term care is its best category. In that area, we gave this facility an A. With our short-term care score, we seek to create a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we analyze a nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The last metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 59.4 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an B+. Few nursing homes performed as well in this category. Inspection ratings are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. There are several criteria within this grade. Most of the subcategories are tied to nurse staffing. This facility offers 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, of which more than one hour of those were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained nurses. In computing our nursing grades, we attach more weight to hours performed by registered nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we assessed is long-term care, ended up being this nursing home's worst category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this area. This is one of the few dings of a strong report card. For patients seeking a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility vaccinated 95.68965 percent of its patients, which is a very solid total. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.5 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is not nearly as favorable than its vaccination record.
