One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great facility is that it earned a very impressive short-term care grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A. In calculating these short-term care scores, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to formulate a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. This place excelled in two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it supplied about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the typical nursing home. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of patients that were able to return home from the facility. It fared better than most facilities in this area with 53.2 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

This nursing home has received near flawless government inspections recently. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this area. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This nursing home was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to resident safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. Nursing grades are based in large part on nurse staffing levels. This facility boasts a really impressive 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. This is one of the higher totals of nursing hours we found at any facility. On top of looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as predictive indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

Switching gears to the fourth category, this nursing home was given an acceptable long-term care grade. While this is not quite as impressive as some of its other scores, this is really not a bad grade. In our long-term care grade, we look at the sheer volume of care provided by a nursing home, along with a series of quality metrics. This facility's vaccination data weren't as favorable some of its other data points in this category, such as its nursing hours data. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 88.46153 percent of its residents. We would love to see some improvement in this area next year. Nevertheless, this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.55 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
