Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Our inspection grades are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

On the list of its many high-end scores, this facility was given an excellent long-term care score. In fact, we gave it a score of A- in this area. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 89.75903 percent of its patients. This is a few points below what we anticipated. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home is also strong in the category of short-term care, where it was awarded a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this area. Our short-term care grades are probably most important for people in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this facility. We found that 4.3 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final area we scored is this nursing home's poorest area. However, even its lowest point would actually be a strength for many nursing homes. We awarded it an above average grade of B in nursing. The nursing rating includes many components, but the paramount consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Minnesota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a policy of moving a patient more often.
