Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of considering the well above average volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the facility's vaccination statistics. For example, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. The last datapoint we looked at was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 3.05 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this category, this statistic can be skewed for some nursing homes based on the medical complexity of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so favorably is that it was awarded an A+ short-term care grade. This is flat out as dominant as it gets in this category. Our short-term care grades are probably more critical for residents requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more skilled nursing services. This means not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This place is above average in terms of both its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in South Carolina in this area with 84.2 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also earned a nearly flawless government inspection report. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an impressive grade of A+. Our inspection ratings are based on many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category typically have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. We were not able to track down deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
In our last area, this facility also was given a very strong nursing rating, with a grade of A. This wrapped up a first-rate report card. The nursing grade includes several components, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was among the highest totals we found. Finally, this place was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a nursing home provides.
