Facility Inspections
Although we gave this nursing home a horrible overall score, we gave it an A for our inspections score. This grade is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid places that had too many deficiencies. Although this place had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We gave this facility a grade of just D for our short-term care grade and that actually ended up being its next most respectable category. Our short-term care ratings are likely more important for people needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. This means not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 48.5 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
This facility ended up receiving rock bottom score in our nursing category. It received an F in this category. In determining our nursing grades, we analyze both staffing levels and the skill levels of the nurses. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the problem here. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an above average 3.9 hours per resident on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than most facilities offer. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both statistics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These datapoints pulled down this nursing home's nursing score quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at was long-term care, where this nursing home received a poor score in this area also. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is definitely a major concern. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means the nursing home did not perform well in our quality measures relating to resident care. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 91.34809 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be somewhat below what we were hoping for but still a respectable figure. Surprisingly, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.97 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
