Facility Inspections
While we graded this place incredibly poorly overall, it actually received a very impressive government inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our more favorable grades in that category with a B. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also pleasantly surprised to discover that this nursing home earned a reasonably solid short-term care grade in our assessment. We gave it a grade of C in this area. Our short-term care grades are probably most critical for folks needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. The question is whether this also impacted quality of care. The last measure we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. In fact, we found that it was above average in this area with 54.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. We weighed the qualifications of nurses working for the facility, as well as the quantity of hours those nurses were with residents, in determining our grade in this area. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. In addition to its weak nursing hour totals, this facility also earned suboptimal marks in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We found that more of this nursing home's residents sustained falls which led to serious injury.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we rated is long-term care. This facility received an abysmal grade of F in that area. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category likely don't provide the type of consistent around the clock care that some other nursing homes offer. One of the statistics we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. We were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to a relatively low 79.347824 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this place was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. This was its best score in this category.
