Short-term Care Quality
This high end facility also excelled in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a score of A+. Very few nursing homes fared better in this category. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to create a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Remarkably, this facility provides about 1.5 times as many hours of services from registered nurses and physical therapists than most facilities we looked at. This is an encouraging sign. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the nation in this area with 65.7 percent of its patients returning home.
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. The nursing score analyzes many components, many of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these figures. On top of providing high levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any nursing home in the country in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we rated was long-term care. We awarded this nursing home one of our more favorable grades in that area, with a grade of B. Even though this was not as strong as a few of this facility's other scores, it is nevertheless a fine grade. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the data points we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this facility provided data regarding vaccinations. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
