Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a strong nursing home overall, this nursing home also excelled in the area of short-term care, where it received an A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. In the category of short-term care, we try to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. This nursing home is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. In fact, it offered roughly 1.5 times as many registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the number of patients that were able to return home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the nation in this area with 69.8 percent of its patients returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Facility Inspections
This facility also earned an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This is based on the nursing home's government inspections. An A+ in this category is one of the best complements we can pay to a nursing home. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility received high marks in the area of nursing. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. Our nursing score consists of several datapoints, however, the paramount consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This place provided 6.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by these figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in Pennsylvania when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these datapoints as good indicators of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home an impressive grade of B. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find information about this nursing home's vaccination rates. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
