Registered Staff Hours
Although we did not rate this facility highly overall, we want to point out its nearly flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid places that have a long list of severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. In spite of this deficiency, this place still received a relatively favorable report.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home received its second best category grade in the area of long-term care. We awarded this nursing home a C in this area, which is a decent grade. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 92.23881 percent of its patients. This is a bit lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Fortunately, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Does this page answer your questions about Pontchartrain Health Care Center?
We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. We analyzed the levels of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses were with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. This place averaged a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This figure is significantly below the national average. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our next area, this facility did not fare very well in this area either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as terrible as it gets. Our short-term care ratings are believed to be more critical for residents requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Based on its grade in this category, we weren't stunned to find that this facility was well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the figures we looked at. Honestly, this was about what we expected to find. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 4.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
