In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ short-term care grade. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to measure a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To offer high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home excelled at the highest level in two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it provided about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the typical facility. The last metric we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Utah in this area with 77.2 percent of its residents returning home.

Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Not many nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Our nursing score includes several subcategories. The most heavily weighted factor is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. This nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident each day. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing. In determining our nursing scores, we apply additional weight to hours provided by registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as reliable measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The next area we looked at is long-term care, in which this facility was awarded a B-. While this wound up being its lowest category score, this is nevertheless not the end of the world. In forming our long-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 98.295456 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.5 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
